coverscoverscovers

here are some mellowed out covers you may or may not have heard...

wonderwall (cat power version)-oasis
love will tear us apart (nouvelle vogue version)-joy division
electric feel (katy perry version)-mgmt
eleanor rigby (booker t. & the mg's version)-the beatles
simple man (alessi's ark version)-lynyrd skynyrd
hoppipolla (we are scientists version)-sigur ros
everything in its right place (sonos version)-radiohead
time to pretend (little boots version)-mgmt
playground love (phoenix version)-air

*ps i was going to include another time to pretend cover, but i quickly realized that it really sounded like something that would be playing during the scene transitions in that show 7th heaven...and let's face it, no one wants to hear that.

beatz and bleepz

so tgif or whatever, right? some lady said that on tv today and it weirded me out. remember when tgif was an actual television event? i lived for that shiz. full house, family matters, dinosaurs, step by step...ps does anyone remember that episode of family matters where urkel gets his drink spiked and gets wasted? slash climbs on top of the roof and nearly falls to his death? it was a pretty serious episode. kind of like the time zach morris crashed his car after one sip of beer on saved by the bell. i don't know who they were trying to get these messages across to considering the cool kids weren't at home watching tgif since they were probably already out drinking. maybe it was to make the lame-o's feel better. anywayz, here are some beatz to make up for the lack of tgif tv:

lovegame (jody den broeder rmx)-lady gaga
hooligans (noisia rmx)-don diablo & example
bending space and time-max justus
neon love-tesla boy
rainbow arabia (max justus rmx)-omar k
hey you (le castle vania rmx)-kill the noise
bulletproof (foamo dubstep rmx)-la roux

aaaand yet again we have another awkward part of the night song. you know, like when you're walking up from the bar by yourself and you get attacked by various members of the ohio woodland animal society, aka deer and/or skunks. so you run really fast, but not so much because you're being stampeded...more because you are thinking about the easy mac that you will be eating after you steal it from someone's room who is either passed out or absent. not that this has ever happened to me...

feeling better (doc ron rmx)-teenagers

listen, jam, repeat

i have had this song (star guitar) on repeat all day. if i could fly, which i already tell people i have the ability to do, (usually to explain how i got someplace so fast. ex: q-how did you get here so fast? a-i flew.), i would most definitely listen to this whilst propelling myself through the stratosphere. well, either this or two other songs, which i can say without (much) shame, are on my airplane takeoff playlist (yes, i have one of those): the E.T. flying theme (you know, the bicycle in front of the moon song), and obviously the neverending story falcor flying theme (ps, bastian is lame and didn't deserve the endless wishes he got at the end. let the bullies beat him up.). but back to this song. it's srsly a+ in my book. if you need a pick-me-up, listen to this:

star guitar (brookes brothers rmx)-shinichi osawa

wednzilla jamz

it's that time of the week again...well, not yet exactly. there's still about an hour left of tuesdizzle, but i will be spending the day at the mechanic tomorrow for question mark number of hours, and i don't know when slash if i'll get around to bbbbbblogging. that being said, i just have to say that i really hope that my car is the kind of dead like in E.T. where you and elliot cry because you think E.T.'s dead but then his heart does that crazy red glowing thing and he's as good as new. and not the kind of dead like in unfaithful where richard gere kills that guy with a snow globe and has to wrap him up in a carpet and then they sit at that green light for forever because they know they're probs going to jail and/or hell. but since i thought my car was fixed TODAY after coughing up almost $100 that could've gone towards fun times and/or shoes, i think we're looking more at the richard gere scenario. aaaanyways, here's some jamz to get you (slash ME) through the middle of the week. lots of remixes of songs that everyone knows (or should know, anyway). i highly recommend the gigamesh remix of radiohead's everything in its right place, it's super good. and who can ever resist a little chaka khan? not me, not me.

gems from down undah

so i feel like i harp on accents a lot, and this post is no exception. i've come to realize that people with australian and/or new zealand(ian) (ese) (ish)? accents are automatically ten times funnier than people with not those accents. aka americans. kath and kim proves my point. when nbc decided to pull another "let's make a united states version of this comedy" with the australian show kath and kim, i thought, okay, they pulled it off with the office, perhaps molly shannon and selma blair and their ridiculous outfits will be able to pull this one off too. falsefalsefalse. i didn't laugh once during the pilot. granted, i hadn't seen the aussie version at this point and figured it couldn't be much better. again, falsefalsefalse. kath and kim australia is one of the funniest shows i've ever seen, and i can really only chalk it up to the accent difference. i don't know what that means, though. anyways, here's one of my fave kath and kim clips:

if you'd like some more laughterthoughts from down under, you should try watching summer heights high if you haven't already. it's a mockumentary that follows three characters, all played by the same guy. probably the best show ever, no joke. or, well, lots of jokes, but you get what i mean. here are some clips of thattt...

and finally i'd like to give new zealand a little shout out. i bet you're thinking, yeah whatever, i already watch flight of the conchords and that's plenty new zealand for me. well, i bet you haven't heard of eagle vs. shark, which is like, the new zealand answer to napoleon dynamite only 800 times better (again, i attribute the laughs to the accent). it's w/ jemaine clement from flight of the conchords, looking super-fug i might add. i highly recommend you watch it. here's a clip:

beatz and bleepz

could it really be friday already? i've done my fair share of absolutely nothing this week, which is to be followed by a more fun version of absolutely nothing starting tomorrow (slash today?). here are some jamz to energize you (slash me) to get off the couch and stop watching the travel channel, because let's face it, that's one of the most masochistic things you can do. you heard me anthony bourdain...stop ruining my life. anywayzzz, saturday marks the kickoff of pool season, and i plan to drown everyone else's inferior tunez out with the ghetto blaster (if you don't know what i'm talking about you are a n00b and clearly not a loyal reader and i hate you). let's see you all try and be summer-y with your jason mraz and your jack johnson now! your ihomes will be no match for my jambox, which will be cranking out the bsc theme song, total eclipse of the heart (all versions, obv), and all things robotronic. check out the wale track feat. gaga...superfab.

extraball (burns rmx)-yuksek
chillin-wale feat. lady gaga
the change up (jokers of the scene rmx)-rob threezy
i hold the crown (gigi barocco rmx)-redman
liszotomania (holy ghost! love paris rmx)-phoenix
wreck the discotek (barletta edit)-john roman
illogical-surprise junkies

and now for my favorite part of this post, the awkward part of the evening theme song (which i feel like has been very 80's prom-esque in past posts, this week being no exception). this time i'd like you to envision yourself in a post-party haze trying to remember what that person's name was that you beer-bonded with, then trying unsuccessfully to type said name into facebook search to loyally fulfill that promise you made as you said your goodbyes that by brunch-time tomorrow morning you and (insert name here) would be the very best of facebook friendz 4 lyfe. (not that i ever do this, especially to people i hardly know...)

back of the van (fred falke ultimate beverly rmx)-ladyhawke

sorrysorrysorry

i apologize for neglecting you for so long...i can't imagine what you've been doing without my musical suggestions and babysitters club commentary. but don't you worry, here's a new batch of jamz to make up for my ausencia:

00h00-danger
ghost-mille
woo booost-rusko
solid gold-the golden filter
it's not my problem (thin white duke rmx)-sneaky sound system
helix nebula-anamanaguchi
rawk this party-teh interweb kidz
all the love (urbanfunk rmx)-dean raven

salem al fakir

my inner conscience often tells me to avoid the whole michael buble wannabe frank sinatra genre...it creeps me out and reminds me of my mother and i don't particularly enjoy either of those things when i'm listening to music. i am not, however, opposed to a little modern take on jazz/soul/funk here and there, which i find to be the antithesis of the toolishness that is michael buble and his counterparts. (okay, the two genres aren't really connected, i just felt like hating on michael buble...) so this leads me to my point, which is that salem al fakir, an award winning swedish musician, is, in the words of tony the tiger, grrrrrrreat. while i can't pigeon-hole him into any one genre, i assure you he's really good. here are some trax, check em out:

good song
it's true
this is who i am
thank you

aaaand if you're looking for a little electro, sebastian ingrosso and axwell do a great remix of it's true here.

no kids allowed

no kids is fast becoming one of my new favourite (british spelling, fancy i know...) bands. they do some charming little pop beatz...they kind of remind me of architecture in helsinki, or perhaps even yacht a little bit. either way, they're worth a listen. here are some tracks below:

i love the weekend
the beaches all closed
for halloween
bluster in the air

things i do in my spare time

besides this blog of course. man i am good at distracting myself. what a terrible thing to be good at...my love affair with paint (and obsession with all things neon and lasers) has got to stop.

5.10.2009

8-bit love

plz enjoy this lovely little gameboy remix of yelle's ce jeu...

beatz and bleepz

sorry this is coming at you a little late, but this quest to bring you weekend beatz taught me many things. most of all, it gave me an appreciation for lil wayne that i never thought i would have. ah, the power of remixes. i think you will like the ones i've collected this week, but as levar burton sez, don't take my word for it.

and we cannot cannot cannot forget the awkward part of the night song where you are either slow dancing in a prom dress (don't know how likely that is...) or you're grabbing your youth by the reigns and making memories that involve 4 am silent car rides to steak and shake.

5.07.2009

random smattering of electro

basically these are just some of the loose bits i've been meaning to include over the past week or two but that haven't really fit in anywhere in particular. so enjoy this musical grabbag, yeah?

i'll keep it with mine (pocketknife's odd beauty rmx)-nico
maison7 (minimix by jbag)-kitsune
girls (grandtheft rmx)-walter meego
paper planes (papi rmx)-m.i.a.
feeling better (build rmx)-the teenagers

skeleton boy (grum rmx)-friendly fires
1901 (rac rmx)-phoenix
chasing waterfalls-faux pas
destination part 1-damn arms
show me love (blame rmx)-steve angello and laidback luke

stealing the covers

i have a soft spot in my heart for covers...here are a few great ones i've found over the last week. not sure they beat the originals, but they do it up their own way. thoughts? i'm especially fond of the idioteque cover done by calico horse. a+ material.

flume (the chairs cover)-bon iver
single ladies (mccarthy trenching cover)-beyonce
idioteque (calico horse cover)-radiohead
paper planes (pale young gentlemen cover)-m.i.a.
maps (rogue wave cover)-yeah yeah yeahs

step off, betch

so i am still totally completely mayjah-mayjah-mayjahly obsessed with this track by blatta & inesha featuring one of my all-time faves (at the moment, anyway) congorock. this song reminds me of if robots lived in the jungle in outer space. so if you think you might not like that scenario so much, perhaps you should skip this jam. but i still am absolutely gaga for it.

real estate is real good

here's a lovely little band i've just discovered that sounds very much like something i would listen to during an epic roadtrip through the american southwest. which i haven't exactly done, and haven't exactly made plans to do, but is definitely something i dream about doing. want to come on the almost sort of yet to be planned imaginary adventure? anyways, here are some tuneskies for you to mellow out to...very reminiscent of some of yo la tengo's stuff, like maybe nowhere near or green arrow.

troop beverly hillz

we're the girls from beverly hills, shopping is our greatest thrill. spoken like pros. it gave girl scouts everywhere hope that maybe, just maybe, one day shelley long would sweep in and fashionista-fy their troop. i know my girl scout troop sucked, which is probably why i stayed in it for about a year in third grade. my troop leaders were not unlike the hated velda, only unfortunately no one was there to shut them down and force them to work at kmart. instead we were stuck earning badges the lame way, including the horseback riding badge, which for some reason involved camping in hell for a night. first of all, it was about twenty below zero (i'm exagerrating, but not much...), we were forced to stay in cabins that even lincoln would've frowned upon, we had to eat food cooked on a sterno stove which was prepared by the middle school girl scouts (at least two issues here...why would anyone think it was a good idea to allow middle schoolers to cook food for others, and why would anyone think it would be okay to stay in girl scouts past elementary school???), and mostly me and the other normals cried the entire trip wishing we were at home watching nickelodeon and playing with our dogs. anyways, here's the first part of troop beverly hills. i highly recommend it, esp. if you have the swine flu like i do. and for the rest of the parts, here are the links, respectively: part 2, part 3, part 4, part 5, part 6, part 7, part 8, part 9, part 10, part 11, part 12.

offshoot of bscbscbsc post

i think we should bring back the bsc books in a big way. the big comeback novel will be called "kristy and the mystery of the swine flu", in which kristy recruits the rest of the babysitters to tackle the swine flu epidemic (a very pertinent issue that is sure to grab the attention of american, canadian, and mexican audiences). sure there will be challenges along the way...like, for example, how they possess minimal credibility in the scientific world...middle school biology is just not going to cut it, even if mallory probably DID get straight a's. it's not her fault she has glasses and is thus stereotyped as the smart one, slash nerdo-4-lyfe. i know for a fact that claudia would not be able to contribute much, considering she was flunking her class in dawn and the haunted house. *sidenote, i don't know why dawn was the protagonist here considering claudia ended up being at the center of the mystery. actually, this title makes little to no sense considering there was no haunted house involved, just a crazy old cat lady who they all assumed was a witch after jumping to conclusions.* but back to the pending novel. mallory will clearly be the one doing all the research. dawn will be out saving the pigs or whatever it is californians with blonde hair (slash californians) do all day, while claudia will be designing fashionable swine flu masks to sell at the arts and crafts fair like in claudia's missing jewels. stacey will be baking cakes and cookies that look like pigs, aka things she can't eat since she has diabetes, to raise money for research. kristy will be out bossing people around and stealing some of the research money to buy herself a new baseball mitt. meanwhile maryanne will be quietly commenting on how sorry she feels for everyone who has swine flu, and getting shut-down on all her ideas by the rest of the babysitters. together they will come up with an unlikely solution inspired by the rodowsky kids. now, i'm not saying i have a real solution to the swine flu, i'm just saying it might not hurt to check the healing properties of a little finger paint and glitter. the novel will be available for purchase through the scholastic book company in the fall of '09. oh, and i forgot, a couple of the babysitters might catch the flu (i'm not saying who, but i'm sure you can guess), and thus will be permanently quarantined. to make up for their abscence, i'll introduce some guest-star babysitters, probably mischa barton and lindsay lohan seeing as how their careers are tanking and they'll take any work they can find. despite my dislike for mischa, and semi-dislike for lindz, i figure i'll at least save $$$ on food expenses by hiring them. i plan on paying them in cigarettes and black nail polish.

bscbscbsc

kristy, i hate to break it to you, but you're going to get swine flu if you keep up this behavior. not that i would mind...but if you do catch it, could you plz take mal down with you? i really think it would be for the best as the whole bsc would increase in likeability. here is another episode of the best/worst show ever, entitled maryanne and the brunettes. not only does it teach us that we should dislike brunettes (like myself...it taught me the value of self-loathing), but that we should also always trust boys with southern accents, especially ones named logan, because they're super nice. this episode also teaches us that kristy is a super betch, and that girls with accents reminiscent of new jersey, long island, and other places we associate with hair gel, tanning salons, and the mafia, are always trying to steal your boyfriend but in the long-run will ultimately fail due to their poor reputations. and overuse of blue eyeshadow. really, marcy, you're on the road to prosti-dom. (ps i really have nothing against people with accents...in fact, i sometimes wish i possessed the street-cred that i assume comes along with having an accent. unless it's a midwestern one...in that case, thanks but no thanks.) and just in case you'd like a rendition of the bsc themesong as performed by alex hurst and myself, here is the link to our masterpiece (which i've blogged about before but will do so again).

zapatillas huija

so i realize i have an unhealthy obsession with my hi-tops (the one pictured above is similar, but mine are a brighter, almost neon, pattern of awayo fabric) that i bought from huija when i was in argentina...i never understood why people would rob someone of his/her shoes, or resort to violence over someone stepping on their own kicks. but now i get it. i go to great lengths to keep them clean, thus defeating the very purpose of shoes, which is eventually to mess them up. i only wear them on days when there is slim to no chance of inclimate weather, and if someone even THINKS of treading over my feet while i wear them, i shoot them with mind bullets before they can carry out their sick and twisted plan. but enough about MY shoes, which are infinitely better than yours. go check out the new collection from designer mariana marrari, creator of huija (granted it's their winter down there) and i'm sure you'll fall in love like i have. and then maybe next time you see me you'll remember not to eff with my footwear.

parle a ma main, betch

bonjour, mon ami! een zee speereet of zee around zee world partee een stone zees eeveneeng (attempt at a french accented 'in the spirit of the around the world party in stone this evening'), i am about to knock yo socks off with some french beatz. i spent last night digging around my itunes for zee best of zee best french electro/rap (basically the whole cast of ed banger records), with french vocals of course, since my friend megan asked me if i would be so kind as to make a playlist for their room (which is obviously france). so grab a baguette and put on a beret and jam out to these tunes avec moi. ps i really tried to hold back on the yelle songs to balance it out, but i love every single one so it was hard to pick. if nothing else, listen to ce jeu...it will blow your mind.
